Across the country, countless individuals and institutions work quietly and tirelessly to uplift their fellow citizens. Many serve under extremely challenging conditions — facing physical hardships, lack of support and often even criticism. Instead of appreciation, they are sometimes ridiculed, and true service often goes unnoticed, and those who dedicate themselves to helping others may feel disheartened and eventually discontinue their work.
This lack of encouragement also discourages others who may wish to take up similar initiatives. Consequently, large sections of the country, especially remote and neglected regions, continue to suffer due to limited access to essential social services such as education, healthcare, safe drinking water and community development. Many inspiring individuals and institutions remain unknown to the public and outside the reach of government attention.
It was this concern that motivated Shri Sugalchand Jain and a few like-minded friends to take meaningful action. They believed that genuine good Samaritans must be identified, supported and celebrated — not only to shine a light on their inspiring efforts but also to motivate others to participate in community and social service as a worthy and fulfilling pursuit.
This vision led to the establishment of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation, a public charitable trust dedicated to recognizing exceptional humanitarian service through the prestigious Mahaveer Awards, an annual honour presented to individuals and organizations whose service to the underprivileged meets the high standards set by the Foundation.
Honouring individuals and institutions that embody the timeless values of Bhagwan Mahaveer. Beginning with a single award in the category of Community & Social Service, the programme has grown significantly over the years — today it comprises four awards, and the total cash component has increased from ₹5 lakh to ₹40 lakh.
Four categories that recognize outstanding contributions across key areas of service
